This month, our meeting was held at the Marriott Courtyard West where we were treated to appetizers and beverages. Our spotlight speaker, Janel Northington with Mobile Mommies, also gave us some M&Ms (who doesn't love M&Ms?)!

Our featured speaker this month was Jeannine Vegh. She is an Independent Marriage & Family Therapist, licensed in the state of Ohio to practice psychotherapy. Jeannine spoke to us about the 7 principles for making a relationship work from the Gottman Institute.

What can you do to make a relationship work?

1) Build love maps

  • Maintain awareness of your partner's world

2) Share fondness and admiration

  • Make deposits into the Emotional Bank Account

3) Turn towards instead of away

  • Accept bids for emotional connection

4) The positive perspective

  • A positive perspective occurs when the friendship of your marriage is strong

5) Manage conflict

  • Accept influence from your partner: be open to compromise
  • Discuss your problems: take turns listening to one another about perpetual issues
  • Practice self-soothing: keep yourself calm

6) Make life dreams come true

  • Find ways to support each other's life goals and dreams

7) Create shared meaning

  • Build a shared sense of purpose.  What is your mission and legacy?

For more information, visit Gottman.com where you can explore videos, books or find out about couple's workshops around the country. There is also a Gottman Referral Network on the website to find local therapists, as well as a free app called Gottman Card Deck. All the couples cards that were displayed on the table are on this app.
